Happy Father’s Day

Happy Father’s Day

An Interview with GROWTH Community Contributor

Travis Napper

To celebrate Father’s Day and honor the dads in our community, we interviewed one of our GROWTH Community members, Travis Napper to learn about his experience as a dad.

What has been the most challenging part of balancing fatherhood and your career?

It has been a challenge at times. Having a family and being a father was the dream for me, so I like to be a part of my kids’ lives as much as I can. It takes lots of planning and juggling with Brittany my wife, lol. The toughest part is when I worked with groups of people that are in a different phase of life, either pre or post-kids at home. I am protective of my family time, so after-hour events and travel can be the hardest to balance. When possible, I try to involve my family and kids in my work events and travel. It makes it so I get to spend more time with them but also gives them a great sense of what my job is.

What is your favorite thing about being a dad?

Watching them grow and enjoy life. Plus, every big hug is the best!

Can you define what work-life balance means for you?

Priorities. It means knowing where work and family fit in your priorities. For me God is first, family is second, and work and everything else is next. I need to live by these priorities in order to give my fullest to each. Having the ability to make space for healthy outlets that destress, refresh and re-energize you are important to be able to give your best work and focus to your job.

What has worked for you and what hasn’t while working as a dad?

Making sure that when I get home, I am present and not distracted by work. I haven’t always been successful with this, but I feel I have gotten much better, and it makes a great difference in how much more enjoyable home life is for my family and me!

What is a piece of advice you have for dads in the workplace?

Enjoy your work, but enjoy your family time even more. Your time with your children is precious and limited. There will be many years of work left after the kids leave the nest.

Anything else you would like to share with the community?

Time is more valuable than money!
